My first home was built in the 1950’s and had a pocket door separating the living room and the kitchen.

I loved it because it offered privacy without taking up space for the door to swing into either room. Although I’ve viewed these doors as nostalgic and old-fashioned, I appreciate their use in many new construction and remodel designs. They provide a more efficient use of space especially when you leave The Door Wide Open.

Modern day pocket doors are reemerging in various shapes and styles. Many homeowners love an open floor plan until they discover the lack of privacy when they need it. These doors are definitely for the those that want open living space and the option to close off an area as a sound barrier or for privacy.

The emergence of sliding barn doors is also on the rise, optimizing space while eliminating the traditional swing-style door. They add rustic charm that is so popular right now, but it doesn’t suit everyone, so there are many sliding door options available.

Whether you like big open spaces or closed off areas for privacy, considering the installation of a pocket or sliding door may make your dream home more functional. After all, you LIVE in your home and comfort is key. You have your own design and function style and a quality Realtor will listen and offer suggestions to turn a home within your budget into one that fits your lifestyle.
